Why Are Christians So Judgmental?

Conversation Stopper

Christians on college campuses are often thought of as being judgmental. They live differently from those around them by avoiding drinking, sex, parties, and a lot of other things students find fun. This can lead them to appear judgmental of those around them; often, the truth is Christians are judgmental of those around them.

Assumptions

  • Saying no to something implies judgment on those who say yes.
  • Acting differently implies judgment on their choice.
  • Disagreement means judgment.
  • Lack of approval or consent implies judgment.
  • Judgment of anyone is not appropriate.

Talking Points

  • What do you mean by judgmental or being judged?
  • Have you really never judged anybody?
  • We all judge all the time.
  • How have you been judged by a Christian?
  • Why do you feel like Christians are so judgmental?
  • Why does this prevent you from checking out Jesus?

The Hammer Analogy

Think of it this way: If I go out and pound dents into your car with a hammer, would you blame the hammer or blame me?

Dude, the hammer is 'not guilty'!"

As a believer, I am often embarrassed at reading media accounts of Christians behaving badly. Doing harm to others in the name of God is one of the worst forms of abuse.

But the guilty party here is the person who misuses religion, not religion itself. Just as you wouldn't blame the hammer, don't blame religion.

Just to round off the point, I might say, "The proper use of a hammer would be to pound nails for Habitat for Humanity, a Christian organization that recently completed its 500,000th home for low income people.

Now THAT'S how to use a hammer!"

Borrowed from “Talk With Rick Mattson” http://rickmattson.blogspot.com/ Elevator Apologetics Part 1: Don't blame the hammer.

The Drunk-Driving Analogy

Taking away someone’s keys that are drunk…not judging drinking but harmful for you to drive drunk.

  • Where have you had disagreement with another?
  • Is it possible for two people to disagree agreeably?
  • Sometimes the most loving thing to do is to not approve.
